Portrait of Richard J Freeman

I work where deep science meets commercial strategy, currently at Illumina, after years selling for Roslin Technologies, Roche, and Thermo Fisher. Off the clock I write about selling to scientists and tinker with AI tools.

How I work

Selling in life sciences has less to do with the product than people assume. Understand the science well enough and trust tends to follow.

Science first

I speak the language of researchers because I was one. When the people across the table have PhDs, that history is the difference between a polite meeting and a real conversation.

Grounded in practice

I tend to trust what I have actually seen work. Most of what I know about selling to scientists came from doing it, in labs and biotech companies, not from a framework.

Comfortable in the early stage

Early-stage companies suit me: limited resources, no playbook, and a lot to prove. I have built commercial functions from nothing before, and I like the work.
